10 Big Impact Distance Learning Teaching Tips: Entitled WebCT teaching tips, these are applicable to any Distance Learning situation. 01/27/05

Experience as a Distance Learning Teacher Makes You a Better Classroom Teacher: "A whopping 85% of faculty reported that their experience as online teachers 'will have a positive effect on their classroom instruction.' To sum up, (a) faculty have to invest a lot of time into developing online learning versions of their courses, (b) they do so (at least in the SLN program) with the active collaboration of other talented and experienced teachers, and (c) some of the gains from this effort can inevitably be translated back into the traditional classroom....online instruction does not simply entail mimicking what happens in the classroom, but rather, requires a transformation: a re-conceptualization of their course and learning objectives given the options and constraints of the new learning environment." 12/31/04

‘Real Time, Real Young, Real Smart’ ~ The use of the Internet for real time teaching with 5 to 8 year olds: "This paper documents the processes involved in conducting a trial of real time teaching via the Internet with children aged five to eight years. Theoretical and technolgocial issues are explored. The paper attempts to contribute to current debate on the use of ICTs in education with very young children. The use of online learning at tertiary level is well documented in current research. However, little is known about the use of real time teaching via the Internet with very young children. The findings of this paper indicate that enhanced learning outcomes are likely to result from the use of real time teaching via the Internet with children aged five to eight years." Barriers to Distance Education: Zane L. Berge, Ph.D. conducted "A survey (n=2504)...to help better understand and more systematically study the barriers to distance training and education. This study supplies evidence of not only what barriers there are in distance education, but the priority given to them by various stakeholders and at different stages of organizational maturity regarding distance education and training." The survey covers K-12 as well as post-secondary, and addresses several aspects of the problem. 03/29/03

The Role of the Facilitator in Distance Learning - Adding the Human Factor to eLearning: "A blended or hybrid approach, using faculty facilitators or mentors, adds a human touch to distance learning. These faculty are not necessarily content experts, but facilitators or mentors who have a degree in the appropriate academic discipline....It is my opinion that...success comes from using a hybrid model of distance education that involves the electronic delivery of content coupled with face-to-face contact by a faculty facilitator or mentor." 02/11/03
