Portfolio Assignments in Teacher Education: A Tool For Self-regulating the Learning Process? "This study examines the effects of a portfolio programme on self-regulation – and thus among third year students of teacher education training to be secondary school teachers. ... The study indicates a significant increase in self-regulation. The portfolio programme therefore improves students’ capacity to go through their learning process independently ...The comparison of the students’ own opinions with those of the portfolio supervisors also reveals the weak links in the self-regulation cycle. Students have difficulty evaluating and re-orientating their learning process. It also appears that students do not set and/or implement new objectives themselves, which means that they cannot regulate their own learning process on a completely independent basis because they have not thoroughly mastered all the components of the self-regulation cycle." [Quote is from the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning]. 08/23/07

Helen Barrett (Ms. Barrett does so much great work with e-Portfolios, and shares it so willingly, that she gets a whole section of her own on my page :)

REQUIRING Student Portfolios? Helen Barrett Required High School Portfolios, Electronic Portfolios June 16, 2006. Stephen Downes said, "Helen Barrett and I are of one mind on this, and I really like the story she tells to illustrate the point: 'The students there were required to set up a 3-ring notebook, put in specific sections and assignments. When a group of the students graduated from high school, they built a bonfire and burned their portfolios.' The issue is ownership. When students are required to create portfolios, and worse, told how they should be structured and filled, they lose any ownership over the process, and the portfolios become, as Barrett reports, "another example of what Lee Shulman calls 'perversion' of the original concept of the portfolio." 06/16/06

Portfolios in High Schools - to "e" or not to "e": BC Campus.ca describes this recorded webcast, available at the BCCampus website: "Dr. Helen Barrett, keynote speaker for the BCEd Online Conference in April, gives a brief overview of the literature on the electronic portfolio development process and highlights several strategies that enable reflection: blogging and digital storytelling." 05/29/05

Engagement with Electronic Portfolios: Challenges from the Student Perspective: " While it is generally agreed that e-portfolios have great potential to engage students and promote deep learning, the research that has been conducted to date focuses very little on student perceptions of value of the e-portfolio for their learning. If students do not accept the e-portfolio as a holistic means with which to document their learning in different contexts and more importantly, agree or wish to use the e-portfolio as an integral part of their educational experience, then the potential impact the e-portfolio will have on learning will not be realised. This paper highlights four themes arising out of research that is underway within an international framework of collaboration between the University of Edinburgh, the University of British Columbia and the University of Waterloo." 04/09/06

The Electronic Portfolio Boom: What's it All About? Greta Holt (see her own exemplary portfolio, done in the Segue CMS) says this "...is a great resource to explain the use of ePortfolios. Blogs discussing e-portfolios in education:

Canada BC Ministry of Education's Graduation Portfolio website: "Graduation Portfolio is a four-credit graduation requirement for Graduation Program [beginning with students who enter grade 10 in 2004]. It is designed for delivery over three years. During grades 10 to 12, students create portfolio evidence based on six Portfolio Organizers: Arts and Design; Community Involvement and Responsibility; Education and Career Planning; Employability Skills; Information Technology; Personal Health." 10/17/04

Portfolios to Webfolios and Beyond: Levels of Maturation: "Webfolios may have the most significant effect on education since the introduction of formal schooling. When fully matured and implemented by capable professional educators throughout every discipline in an educational institution, webfolios promise a viable alternative to current, high-stakes testing, which focuses education on test-taking rather than teaching and learning. The promise webfolios hold-a richer educational experience for all-will not be realized, however, unless educators embrace webfolio concepts and apply them at their highest level of maturation." 05/15/04

ERADC (ePortfolio Research & Development Community): " This community has been set up to provide a reference point for interested parties to contribute and learn more about ePortfolios and developments that may impact on the ePortfolio. The ePortfolio can serve as a tool for learning, assessment, career management and knowledge supervision." 05/03/04

ePort Consortium: "...the collaboration of higher education and IT institutions working to define, design, and develop electronic portfolio software environment and management systems. From a conceptual perspective, developing members are working to invent a new electronic portfolio application environment to address various ePortfolios needs. From the technical standpoint, the ePortConsortium desires to encourage collaboration among IT institutions to define and adopt interoperability and transportability measures and standards when building prototypes to test potential scenarios and conceptual environments. If successful in this effort, electronic portfolio systems created by commercial software companies and those built by educational institutions will be compatible. In the interest of accomplishing these goals, the ePortConsortium appreciates your participation and welcomes your input." 05/03/04

Definition and Importance of Electronic Portfolios: "Many students already produce portfolios for various uses, such as reflection, communication with instructors, or presenting examples of outstanding work and credentials to potential employers. Their use has the potential to transform teaching and learning so that it is more learner centered and outcomes oriented. Architects, artists, and others have long used portfolios to show their visual work, while other professionals (for example, musicians) use them to demonstrate their creative talents." 04/29/04

Electronic Portfolios: Blending Technology, Accountability & Assessment: "Portfolio-based assessment and, more recently, the electronic portfolio have been seen as an alternative to standardized tests. An e-portfolio collects student work for individual teachers to grade and critique. ... e-portfolios...combine individual student work with standards-based assessment, while also organizing and indexing student data. This article highlights the collaboration between a public school and an educational software firm to create an e-portfolio project that would achieve these goals." 04/26/04
