Ideas & Information:

Should you buy a DSLR or Point and Shoot Digital Camera? The article lists the pros and cons of each. 05/13/06

Sharing Photographs and Other Still Imagery: From wwwTools For Education (one of my subscription newsletters), here's a full page of information and links on this one topic. LOTS of useful leads here, so I'll leave you with this page link rather than pointing out individual items. Headings include Why Share Pictures?, Pedagogical considerations, Sharing Pictures in Educational Practice, Hardware, Software, Software for Sharing, Albums, Mixing the Media, Tools & Toys, Resources, Books. 04/09/06

BubbleShare: "The best way to share your photos and the stories that go with them. No account required. FREE and PRIVATE sharing, now with blog integration, audio captions, photocasts, and more." 03/05/06

Flickr ~ FREE Online Image Storage: "The best way to store, search, sort & share your photos." I'm sure I'll make of this new (beta) site, but some of their features hint at many possible uses beyond what I can think of right now. Flickr makes it easy to add a photo to a blogger.com blog, for example, by letting you set this up in advance by entering your list of blogs blogger.com and the photo-post settings to use for each one. You can even use email to upload your photos, complete with their own titles and descriptions. Or you can select to download their small desktop application (WinXP and Mac) that will batch upload to your flickr account. How much easier can they make it? 04/01/05

Camera Feature Comparison Chart: for when you're buying your camera. It's a pdf file, so you can print it and take it to the store with you. 09/14/02

How Digital Cameras Work: A multi-page tutorial that covers everything you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask. Mini-lessons so you can understand all their features, vocabulary, etc. An excellent resource. 09/14/02

Optical vs. Digital Zoom: What's the difference? 09/14/02

PhotoTips from ACDSystems:They have an archive of tips n tricks. 08/08/02

Scanning Tips: This set of articles explains and illustrates that the following is a myth: "Scan images at 72 dpi because a computer screen displays images at 72 dpi." Included is a chart of APPARENT resolution of different size monitor screens (comparing resolutions, screensizes, and resulting dpi's). Good stuff to know for people who want to display video and photos online. 11/29/02

Tools:

Web Album Generator: FREE! Create online photo albums really fast. I just tried it and it's easy, very fast, simple and fun to use. Thanks to Anthony Tobin's blog posting for this one. 01/25/06

Rostrum Camera: FREE software. Take a single still image and create a movie that pans, tracks, and/or zooms within the image. 08/17/03

OOPS! I want my "erased" images back!

Ulead PhotoImpact: Haven't tried this software yet, but it seems to be good (based on the tutorials I saw using it; see below). 08/08/02 See also: Creations by Dawn: PhotoImpact Tutorials: 08/08/02

ACDSee: "manage, enhance, share". I'm using the trial version of their ACDSee Suite; good product, but have had some trouble getting technical support on a couple of features I wanted to ask about before purchasing. 08/08/02

Image-ma-jig: For digital photo/image work, this application "gives you the tools you need to easily manage, manipulate and organise all of your image files." ...single or batch image editing; export as HTML or XML; thumbnail catalogs; acquire images from scanners and digital cameras; screen shots; print images in multiple sizes and layouts; image filters; slide shows; screen savers; desktop wallpaper; rename, resize, rotate, crop; red-eye reduction; image overlays; borders; convert to different formats; and much more. 11/04/02

Tutorials:

The 10 Most Common Photographic Mistakes: From Andre Gunther Photography, "Here is a quick rundown of the most common mistakes people (like me) make that mess up a good photo or prevent us from taking a good photo...to kick off [the author's] series on photography techniques." These are good tips and I'll be keeping an eye out for the rest of the series. 06/23/07

Canadian site DP Rounds: Digital Photography In The School: First visit their site of free Instructions. Good information, tips, and tutorial-like pages can be found under the headings of Photo Techniques, Photo Editing, and Photo Equipment. If you're teaching digital photography, they have a teacher's site as well. They offer "e-Rounds": student-ready handouts, integrated with web resources such as "how to" step-by-step instructions, downloadable exercises, showcase of high quality photo examples as well as student "best examples". Teacher-ready resources include teacher's notes, PPT presentations, a student CD, and on-line quizzes. Note: The school packages have a price tag, but reasonable. They also have an annual-fee-based access to their resource sites. 06/18/07

JASC's FREE TUTORIALS centre: Extensive list for Digital Photography. 09/20/03

LVS Online: my favorite online school offers 2 courses called "The Digital Darkroom" (levels 101 and 102, both of which I've taken). Thanks for the use of the name, borrowed for this resource page. 12/31/05
