Beyond Text: Using your voice online: Not only about podcasting. Includes other technologies for your courses -- voice chat, voice boards, voice email. "This resource demonstrates ways you can introduce online voice technologies into your course design and delivery and provide increased flexibility and engagement for learners. It can be used as an individual guide or as a resource for professional development and training sessions. There are three sections:
Contemporary Online Teaching Cases: This site "... has been designed to help teachers work creatively and productively in their online teaching. Each of the cases locate new media and online technologies in the context of broader views of what it means to teach and learn effectively in different disciplines and professional fields in tertiary education. ...We hope the site provides you with plenty of ideas on how to develop and use new media/new technologies in your teaching." The menu is good for drilling down to see the topics/cases you're most interested in. One example: I went to Approaches To Learning > Activity Based Learning and found this case study: "Using online multimedia to help student teachers develop post-primary curriculum and teach art and graphic design. ...This case illustrates the use of rich multimedia and online discursive activities to enhance students' learning and curriculum development skills in visual arts education." Each case/topic is presented in voice segments, and many provide text transcripts of those audio clips. 03/05/06 CoolGenius: A fun site containing lots of information for educators, especially concerning technology for classrooms. "...a service provided to educators by AliveTek, Inc. to help showcase, share, and develop technology that enhances learning." 04/12/02 Educational uses of FLASH and other MULTIMEDIA resources edugaget: A technology review site for educators. "Purpose: to highlight, in plainspoken language, interesting technologies that could be used in the classroom. Strive to be a useful resource for teachers of all subjects. Edited by Steve Brooks, a secondary teacher. He is not a programmer, a network expert, etc. He just likes technology and thinks it has an important role in the classroom. Technology is, however, just a tool. Sometimes you need it and sometimes you don't." 02/04/05 Embed Sounds & Music in a webpage: HOW do I? Headings include: File format choices; Linking directly to audio files; Embedding audio files to play in the background; Embedding music with Flash and XSPF Music Player; Fine tuning: repeat play, autoplay, shuffle play, images, and autoresume; Alternate methods. Each section gives specific instructions and code! 03/02/07 Embed Media ~ HTML Code Generator: "The Embedded Media HTML Generator has been developed to ease the burden of inserting video and animations into web pages." The page will generate code for embedding Flash, Quicktime, RealMedia, Windows Media. 02/05/07 Embed Video: So, You Want To Embed A Video, Huh? "The quick answer is yes, you can. The even longer quick answer is that embedding a video follows the same basic format as embedding a sound. Even the same attribute commands, like AUTOSTART and LOOP, all work in a similar fashion. So what I'll do here is try to explain the many pitfalls of embedding a video, and explain how I got mine to run smoothly." 10/28/04 FLASH media: How to embed flash and still get your page to validate: Becky, instructor at LVSonline.com says, "There are several approved methods for validating the insertion of Flash movies. The most well-known (and pretty much the basis for all the others) is the Satay Method. I wrote up a stripped down version of this. It also addresses some accessibility issues. You probably need to update the link for the Flash plugin -- though you could leave that alt text out, if so desired." 03/04/08 Information and Communications Technology for Language Teachers (ICT4LT): "...the result of over two years' work by an international team of experts ... Excellent lessons, in video 'lecture' format. 07/23/04 Tapped In: Have you ever tried using a MOO (Mulituser Objected Oriented) discussion? It's fun. 'Tapped In' is "the online workplace of an international community of education professionals. K-12 teachers and librarians, professional development staff, teacher education faculty and students, and researchers engage in professional development programs and informal collaborative activities with colleagues. Wired (and wireless) for sound — audioblogging, podcasting and education (The Online Classroom Is About to Become a Noisier Place): Good article by Brian Lamb, Office of Learning Technology, UBC Vancouver, Dec.2004. "...paid services such as Audioblogging.com promise to introduce the medium to newcomers in much the same way that services such as Blogger.com did with personal publishing. "Voice over IP" applications like Skype open up the possibility of multiple voices interacting live, with the conversations easily recorded, edited and played back." [Brian Lamb, Office of Learning Technology, UBC Vancouver, Dec.2004] 12/25/04 WiZiQ: Online Teaching, E-Learning and Live E-tutoring for Education: "A FREE alternative to expensive conferencing tools selling as online teaching/learning software." WiZiQ is virtual classroom that's also a multimedia platform, "equipped with live audio-video communication, chat, content sharing, and session recording capabilities." Includes a whiteboard, video and audio chat, document sharing including PDF, and Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel. Similar to commercial options like Adobe Connect, Webex, Elluminate, Marratech, etc. "WiZiQ brings students and teachers together regardless of the boundaries. With absolutely no cost to join or use its state-of-the-art virtual classroom, WiZiQ is becoming a vital tool in an online teacher’s or a student’s toolkit." Also check out their WiZiQ Live Class Module for Moodle 04/07/08 XML in Higher Education - SMIL: Multimedia Rides the XML Wave: A clearly explained article introduces SMIL (pronounced "smile") -- an acronym for Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, an XML-based dialect for describing the layout and synchronization of multimedia applications. The article includes illustrated SMIL tags, making it easy to understand how to create coordinated multimedia on a webpage by creating a text file of code that looks very HTML-like. 03/21/03 Scratch: Developed at the MIT media lab, this is a logo-like application that makes Logo much easier to learn. "...a new programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web. Scratch is designed to help young people (ages 8 and up) develop 21st century learning skills. As they create Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the process of design. Scratch is available free of charge from the Download page. Audacity: "Audacity is a free audio editor. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Extracts and stores music. Converts files. Sound editor. CD writer. Recorder: "Record what you hear from/through the computer and create your own sound files. Supports Auto recording level, Audio sensor, File processor, Recording scheduler, Recording volume booster, Changing recording file by one-click, etc. (Supports MP3, WMA, Wave PCM)." 02/11/05 Blaze Media Pro: Looks like a truly all-in-one application for most things you'll need in preparing your course for the internet. Gong ~ The Web Voice Communication Tool: "A FREE system for voice communication on the Web. It allows groups of people such as students and teachers to participate in discussion groups using their computers, using both synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous chat. It is commonly used by schools and universities for providing a 'voice board' for teaching purposes. There are several different ways you can use Gong. All are free and unlimited." 08/18/06 Helix Producer: Create RealPlayer media. "Helix Producer converts live feeds or existing audio and video files into RealMedia files, ready for delivery on the Internet or corporate intranet.." They offer a free version with minimal features, and a Plus version if you need more. 10/14/02 MP3 encoders: A list of links to free MP3 encoders, including software that convers WAV to MP3 format. 10/14/03 Skype: (see entry above) Sound: Cool Edit: a good SOUND EDITING program Springdoo - EASY WAY to create/serve audio over the Internet: Springdoo is touted as a way to "talk your emails", but really it's a good tool for people who want an easy and FREE way to create internet voice files.** "Springdoo is an easy way to record, store and serve audio over the Internet. Some people are even using Springdoo to record audio messages that are then placed on websites, chat rooms, dating sites and blogs for anyone to listen to....You do not need any special software or services to record and / or play a Springdoo. Springdoo uses streaming file technology, so there are no file attachments to send in emails and / or download. You can create a Springdoo using your computer and a microphone, or any telephone such as your land line, mobile / cell or even a pay phone." 2/24/06 Wimpy MP3 Button: So you can use MP3s: "Wimpy Button is a quick and painless way to add a single sound to your web page. Wimpy Button does not require any kind of back-end server-side scripting... just standard old HTML." Cost for the Wimpy MP3 button generator is $19.95. Embeds the audio player right in the HTML page, with Play and Stop buttons. 07/30/06 Online Video Editing Tools: Extreme has posted a review of 5 locations where you can edit your videos online for free. "Some people would be surprised that you can edit photos online without locally installed software, but surely video editing is too resource-intensive to be done over the web, right? Wrong! We review five online services that let you do things like scene transitions, cuts, splices, loops, audio overlays—and they're all free. We tested the following: Cuts, Eyespot, JumpCut, Motionbox, and One True Media." 02/15/08 Jing: A free download of some SIMPLE and quick to use software that instantly creates your screen-capture type videos (you can include sound or voice-over if you wish). 08/30/07 Blaze Media Pro: see entry above, under audio. This app. does it all. Camtasia: "a way to capture images off of a web site or a desktop application ...create a tutorial of proprietary software ...capture tools let you grab, edit, and transform image, text, video and voice... as easy as pressing a hotkey." I've heard it highly recommended, folks. 09/10/01 EasyWebVideo.com ~ V2F: Convert various formats to Flash. Very easy to use, and quickly. Makes the files much smaller, so no big downloads. No confusing choices about players for your viewers -- everybody has a Flash Player these days. "You need a tool that will take your standard video file (.avi, .mpg, .wmv, etc.) and do several things, all with the click of a button:
Helix Producer: See above under Audio section. This one does both. Kibisis: "Kibisis is a complete Video to Flash Converter. Kibisis allows you to encode standard video and audio files into low bit rate Flash movies, ready to be streamed across today's Internet connections. Using Kibisis you can create a streaming Flash Video, that anyone can see without the need of any special program - plugin or codec (consider that 99% of the users are capable to see Flash in their web browsers)." 03/31/05 VideoCue: "At its core, Videocue is a unique new application to help you create striking movies of you reading your words aloud. Without Memorizing a single word." To begin, it has a teleprompter so you can read your words to create your lecture, etc. as you look into your webcam. It also has multiple features to add to your finished product, such as subtitles under the video. 01/15/05 Video Toolbox: 150+ Online Video Tools and Resources: Stephen Downes describes this site: "This is a huge list of online video resources, including tools that support live video communications, online video how-tos, online video editors, video converters, video sharing sites, video hosting sites, video management, vidcat and vlogging tools, video mashup tools, mobile video, video search, video downloading services, and online television. Update your older presentations for today's technology; make them more useful for online courses, etc. 05/28/02 Powerpoint to Flash -- Impatica for PowerPoint: "...simply converts the PowerPoint file into a compressed format that is optimized for streaming over the Internet. The Impatica file is typically 95% smaller than the PowerPoint HTML files...supports most of the features of PowerPoint, including text, graphics, transitions, animation effects and, of course, narration."
